Overview Mountwood is good. This was my first time at Mountwood, and they have LOTS of trails. If I remember correctly, they have over 30 miles of trails, divided between ORV trails and true singletrack. I've ridden ORV trails in several other places, and these are about the same. The singletrack, however, is outstanding. Much of it is tight, technical, and fast. If it climbs for very long, it climbs gradually. Many thanks to the folks that laid out these trails. Another benefit is that most of the trails are loops (or can be connected with other trails to form loops), so no matter where you park to start your ride, you're not far from several different trailheads. You can see the lake as soon as you turn off of US Route 50 onto Volcano Road. My suggestion is to follow the road about one mile to the Administration building on the right, and pick up a trail map. They have a rack on the right as soon as you walk through the front door. There are two good places to start a ride; that is, you can park there and have access to several different trailheads and lots of different trails. The first is the boat ramp near the administration building and the other is an ORV trailhead located farther back in the park. I haven't been to the ORV trailhead myself, but it's well marked on the Mountwood Park trail map. Directions Mountwood Park is located approximately 12 miles east of
Parkersburg, WV on US Route 50 at Volcano Road. |
